3 months before 65
Initial Enrollment Period opens. Learn the basics of Parts A, B, C, and D.
Decide your route
Original Medicare + Medigap + Part D, or Medicare Advantage that bundles benefits.
Birthday month
Coverage typically begins the first of your birthday month if you enrolled early.
First year & beyond
Review annually during AEP (Oct 15 – Dec 7). Adjust as your life changes.
What to gather
- Your Medicare card or Social Security info
- Current doctors and preferred hospitals
- Prescription list (name, dosage, frequency, pharmacy)
- Any current insurance ID cards
- Questions about cost, travel, or specialty care
The four windows to know
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
The 7 months around your 65th birthday — 3 before, your birthday month, and 3 after.
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
Oct 15 – Dec 7 each year. Switch plans for the next calendar year.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment
Jan 1 – Mar 31. One switch allowed if you're already in Medicare Advantage.
Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)
Triggered by qualifying events: move, loss of coverage, qualifying for Extra Help, etc.
